After a while, it seemed to occur to him that he has fingers attached to his hand.
After working on his fingers for a while, he now seems to know that his thumb is easiest to suck on. Jonah certainly hasn't mastered sucking on his thumb yet, but he is getting better and better. To help him out, Vanessa and I will sometimes "encourage" his thumb to get into his mouth.
Vanessa and I both know that Jonah's habit might be hard to break in the future, but that's something we are willing to deal with. Jonah still hasn't taken to sucking on a pacifier, so we are all for encouraging anything that will help calm him down. Also, he is super cute when he's sucking on this thumb.

It's not likely he'll still be sucking his thumb in high school.
Okay, so I knew one guy who was still sucking his thumb in high school but he wasn't really firing on all cylinders if you know what I mean.
Gosh I didn't mean to infer that the guy I knew in high school was slow. That wouldn't be nice; he was intelligent and did fine in school, just quite immature.
You know me, always needing to clarify!

Wyatt sucked his thumb... he did so until he was at least 11 years old. He had a callous on his thumb for years and years. I'm big into self soothing so it was okay with me. We just set "thumb sucking quidelines" as he aged and when I got ready for bed I'd check on him.. if the thumb was in I'd pull it out... I practically had to put my foot on his face for leverage but I got it out. Did he put it back in.. sure, but I tried my best. He's 21 now. He doesn't suck his thumb anymore. Whew!
