Jonah's New Toy

Monday, February 22, 2010

The other day, I set Jonah down in the hallway to get his bath started. When I came out, he had discovered the door stop. Jonah tends to like anything that makes noise, so it didn't surprise me that he was enamored by his new find. That being said, it was still fun to watch him. The video below is about 45 seconds of the almost 10 minutes he spent flicking the door stop.

Valentines

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Man have we been busy! Here is a recap of our last few days...

Last Friday Jonah and I went to a Valentines themed get together with my moms group. We ate pizza and did a little painting. The kids made painted hand prints on placemats as a craft project and keepsake for the holiday. With 7 kids under the age of 2 it was a little hectic and messy, but fun. Afterwards, the moms took a little artistic license and prettied the mats up a bit. Craftiness for all!

On Sunday the 14th, Jonah turned 8 months old. As of a few weeks ago at an earache appointment he was 20 pounds 6 ounces. I am sure he is a bit heavier than that now but we won't have any official numbers until his 9 month appointment. I tried to dress him fairly festively for his first Valentines Day. One of the pictures is for size comparison with green monkey, one is a good shot of his two top teeth and one is just cute!

That afternoon we headed off to Wisconsin. Nana and Aunt Louise were bringing Great Grandma Bartlett back home from her extended visit in California. The drive to Beloit and the drive back were not very fun to say the least. A lot of screaming from Jonah and a bit of flared temper from me. The time in between the car rides was very nice though! We got to see Great Gran again and give her a little face time with Jonah. We also got to spend some social time with Louise and Nana after dinner that I have come to really look forward to on our trips to Wisconsin. Before bed Jonah opened a present from Daddy for his first Valentines. He got the book "Yummy Yucky". It is really funny, and a very "boy" book. A good gift from dad to son.

After leaving Beloit on Monday we made a little detour to an IKEA nearby. Since the closest IKEA is 3 hours from us we try to make it to the one that is closest to Great Gran's house when we go. It took a lot of effort and frustration for us to go this time, but such is life. At least I got to expose my son to one of my favorite places!

Jonah eating puffs

Friday, February 12, 2010

A week or two ago, the moms that I get together with encouraged me that Jonah is now old enough to be eating "puffs" as snacks. I had never tried them before, so one of the moms gave me a few for him to try. Initially he didn't know what to make of it and just sort of let it stick to his tongue. They dissolve really quickly and don't taste like a whole lot so I don't think he got the point of them. If nothing else though, they are fun to push around his tray and knock on the floor. I give him a few everyday to practice his pincher finger skills while I am getting his breakfast, or lunch, or dinner ready. This was about a week ago (pre boo boo incident). It is still one of his best attempts to date. He is so proud of himself at the end!

Boo Boo Update

Thursday, February 11, 2010

I am soooo thrilled to say that Jonah's lip is healing very well. The swelling went down considerably in just 2 days and you could start to see his oakie teeth again. Jonah did his part and "exfoliated" his upper lip on his sheets when he would lay in bed and fight taking naps. (Laying his face on his bed and rubbing it back and forth on his sheets.) He basically looks back to normal and I am so glad to have our little face back again. (Don't mind the tears. He had just been fighting taking a nap and Andrew left the tears on for dramatic affect. He really plays them up well doesn't he?!)

First Big Boo Boo

Monday, February 8, 2010

Apparently every parent has one time (or more I am guessing) when they think to themselves, "That was stupid of me"! This weekend Andrew and I had one of those moments in a big way. Because of us, Jonah got his first major boo boo. I hate even writing about it because in order to do so I relive it but this is our real life, so here it goes.

On Saturday Andrew and I took a walk with Jonah in his new snowsuit. It was a sunny day and we wanted to take advantage of the weather and get some pictures of him in the snow. We took Jonah out in his old bigger stroller instead of his new smaller one. In his smaller one I rarely buckle him in because he has to be wedged into it and doesn't slip around at all. (Do you see where I am going with this?) Well, we decided that he would be fine in his bigger stroller unbuckled too. Wrong!! As we were walking along Jonah slipped out of the leg opening in the stroller and fell face first onto the ground. It makes me sick to think about it. Andrew swooped down and grabbed him and I just started calling out the name of Jesus. Jonah's mouth was bleeding everywhere and the amount of blood was exaggerated by the drool from his crying. We were not even a block from the house so we quickly carried Jonah home and got him into the bath to clean up and relax. Tylenol was administered and there was a lot of cuddling, crying, and apologizing to our little man.

His teeth ended up being fine, thank the Lord, but his lip swelled up til it surpassed his nose. He has a little scabbed over mustache now and a scratch on his nose but he is healing well. Andrew and I are trying to be kind to ourselves about the situation, knowing that we are not the first parents to make such a mistake. I am, not surprisingly, having a harder time with cutting myself any slack. Jonah counts on us to be his protectors and I feel like we let him down. He experienced trauma on my watch and I hate it. I know that there is nothing that we can do about it now, except learn from it, but it still breaks my heart.

Teeth, Food, and Faces

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Jonah's bottom two teeth came in a while ago, and now he is working on his top teeth. Interestingly, they are coming in one at a time. So far, only one top tooth has shown up while the other is still hiding. As Vanessa likes to say, he has an okie tooth.

It is strange (and amazing) to think about all the things Jonah has to learn how to do. Eating, of course, is one of those things. He has gotten much better and now eats like a pro. Often, I can't get the food to him fast enough. He will sit there with his mouth open, patiently (sometimes not so patiently) waiting for me to spoon some peas or carrots or whatever he is eating into his mouth.

Although he has gotten much better at eating, he can get distracted pretty easily. Here he is attacking Vanessa's hand and giggling like...a little baby (go figure). This game went on for quite a while; it was great.

And now for the good stuff. So, as most of you know, I take a lot of pictures of Jonah. Something you also probably know is that Jonah takes after his mom and has a very expressive face. When you put these things together (lots of pictures + expressive kid), you can get an awesome sequence of photos. See below for the latest example. His face on the bottom right is priceless!
